General information, facts & figures
GENERAL INFROMATIONBürs is located next to the entrance to the Brandnertal valley, and only about 1 km from the little Alpine town of Bludenz. Our village has retained its rural character, and our guests can enjoy the benefits of staying in the country with a town close-by. The village is also considered particularly conveniently situated for public transport to the surrounding valleys as well as to Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany.
The population of Bürs used to mainly breed animals, cultivate the land and grow wine. The loss of the Außerfeld field as a result of the Schesamur pit, where the most fertile area used to be, led to a noticeable impoverishment of our village, especially considering the extent to which ground and soil used to be the basis for people’s livelihood.
And so the people of Bürs welcomed the construction of a cotton mill and weaving mill in 1836 by Getzner, Mutter & Cie. The Lünersee factory employed more than 200 people. At the time, Bürs had 600 inhabitants. Further money–earning opportunities were provided by the Vorarlberg railway, which was opened in 1872 and the Arlberg railway in 1884.
The farming village gradually turned into an industrial village. As a result of the development of handcrafts and trade and the foundation of other businesses in the industrial area of Bremschl and more recently in the inter-communal business area Quadrella and in the shopping centers Lünerseepark, Zimbapark and Herrenau, the community continues to experience a sustainable economic upturn.

LocationBürs is situated at the foot of the Rätikon opposite the Alpine town of Bludenz. The Ill river forms a natural border between the two towns. Other neighboring communities are Nüziders, Lorüns, Vandans, Bürserberg and Brand. The houses of the village center and the old St. Martins church, the landmark of the village with its pointed steeple, are all close to the rock on the fan delta of the Alvier river. Right behind the residential buildings you can see the high cliffs through which the Alvier river pushes from Bürs gorge. The Alvier river originates in the Brandner valley, and Bürs is situated at its entrance. Bürs itself, however, is part of the Walgau municipalities.
