Brand’s history

14th century
Settlement of the Walsers in the already cultivated high Alpine valley.

1347
First documented reference to Brand.

Around 1410
Construction of a chapel in Brand.

Since 1476
Appointment to local parish

From 1727
Separate parish with approx. 200 inhabitants.

Around 1820 - 1830

Construction of a cart track from Bürs to Brand.

Mid-19th century
Advent of tourism. Samuel Kegele still the only innkeeper in the village.

1870
Construction of the Douglashütte as the first alpine association hut in Vorarlberg.

1905
Opening of the Straßburger hut (now Mannheimer hut) and the Oberzalim hut.

1925
Village now has two hotels  - Beck (Hämmerle/Romantikhus) and Scesaplana, and one guesthouse.

Construction of a paved road from Bürs  to Brand in several stages.

1951
Opening of the Niggenkopfbahn cable car.

1953 - 1958
Construction of the lake Lünersee dam by Illwerke AG with Lünerseebahn cable car and road to Schattenlagant.

1969
Opening of the Palüdbahn railway and ongoing expansion of Brand’s infrastructure.

1981
Further expansion of the road between Bürs and Brand.

1994
Opening of Vorarlberg’s first golf course

1996
Opening of the community center and town hall

1998
Opening of the 6-seater Gulma railway

1999

Opening of the 6-seater Galttjoch railway. The highest point of Brand’s ski region is now at an altitude of 2000 meters.
