The Metamorphosis of Butterflies
Here in the mountains, we witness a true wonder of nature in the butterflies. They are among our most beautiful neighbors and enrich the blooming meadows with vibrant colors. Although the plants up here have little time to bloom, many flower at the same time, offering a colorful variety for insects. Butterflies live for only a few weeks, but their metamorphosis is fascinating: First, the caterpillars eat their way through the leaves of the plants on which they have laid their eggs. When the caterpillar is large enough, it pupates and undergoes an amazing transformation. Almost every cell is renewed in the process, making it hard to believe what kind of butterfly emerges from the unassuming caterpillar.
