Survivors of the Mountains

In the mountains, the air grows thinner and thinner, and life becomes harder. Up here, only the strongest plants and animals manage to survive. Trees become fewer and fewer; deciduous trees disappear lower down, while conifers such as mountain pines, spruce, and fir withstand the cold winter and deep snow well. Mountain pines, in particular, grow slowly, remain small, and can withstand the heavy pressure of the snow. We marmots would also appreciate more trees, especially in the summer, when temperatures above 20 °C quickly become too hot for us. Since we don’t have sweat glands, we like to lie down on cool rocks to cool off.
