FIS Skimuseum: 140 Jahre Vorarlberger Skigesichte

The history of skiing in Vorarlberg dates back about 140 years.

The focus of the permanent exhibition at the ski museum is on three areas. Starting from the beginnings of skiing in Scandinavia, significant Vorarlberg ski pioneers are presented. A second focus is on ski production, which was initially in the hands of wagon companies. That Vorarlberg is a region with a great racing tradition is evidenced by the long list of medals that skiers have won at the Olympic Winter Games and World Ski Championships. All of these successful athletes are represented in the exhibition with objects.

The new special exhibition on the “Hergottschnitzer von Damüls” Johann Martin Bischof (1838 -1928) will open on June 19. The parish church of Damüls, known far and wide for its location and furnishings, is one of the most impressive sacral buildings in Vorarlberg. Especially famous are its frescoes as striking testimonies of art from around 1500. Less known is that a local sculptor, Johann Martin Bischof, is represented. Exactly 100 years ago, he created a powerful crucifix, which is located in the gable niche above the entrance. An exhibition in the setting of the parish courtyard in Damüls will commemorate the “Herrgottschnitzer von Damüls” starting June 2026.
